I want to tell you a story about brains and cars. Did you know that there are many different kinds of brains? What if we thought of them as different kinds of cars instead, for example, there are Audi's, BMW's, Mercedes, and many more besides.
All of these cars have their own different abilities, ways of operating, strengths, weaknesses. One isn't necessarily better than the other. They are just different, with different pros and different cons. If you try to fit a BMW engine to a Mercedes Benz is not going to work properly, not because the Mercedes is broken, but because you're trying to get it to do something that does not fit with how the Mercedes is made. If you're sensible, you wouldn't try to fix the Mercedes, you would hopefully just fit the appropriate engine to the appropriate car.
If you try to expect someone with ADHD to be like a neurotypical, they're not likely to meet your expectations. Not because the ADHD brain is broken. But because you're expecting that brain to be like something it isn't. Equally, you wouldn't get annoyed or angry for the ADHD brain for not being neurotypical. You just change your approach and your expectations. We live in a world based on neurotypical brains that are built on neurotypical expectations.
School is like this. How we're expected to form or maintain relationships is like this. How we're expected to socialise is like this. And so it's how we're expected to work. But what about ADHD brains? They're so often made to feel broken, defective, wrong, but the reality is they aren't. They aren't self obsessed, impolite, lazy, or rude. They are just different. With Stimuli, I wholeheartedly encourage you to learn by your brains, to find ways to accept them, and to learn about the gifts that our different brains can bring. Because our brains belong here too.
